He eventually settled in Italy after teaching African percussions in Spain, Germany, Switzerland and England. In Italy, besides teaching, he collaborates with numerous foreign and Italian musicians and artists- Tony Scott, Karl Potter, Pino Daniele, Tullio De Piscopo, Tony Esposito... Together with Jack Tamà and R. Artale he founded the group "Word Percussion." Abdoul Karim Doumbia

E-Mail
www.humansongs.com/artists.htm
Djembe-L member

Bio:

Malian Master Drummer Abdoul Doumbia was called to the drum at age six, followed by a 16-year apprenticeship to Master Drummer Moriba Keita and others.  Instruction included all phases of technique, composition, harmonizing, teaching skills, drum-making, repair, tuning, and knowledge of both traditional drum and dance.  His drumming education encompassed all types of percussion instruments found in Mandinka society, with an emphasis on djembe and djun-djun.

Abdoul was regional representative for eight consecutive years at the National Drum Festival of Mali before being brought to the US.  He was also the lead drummer for the national drum and dance troupe Babemba, and earlier for the troupe Chemin de Fer.  In addition, he has played for the National Ballet of Mali and taught at Le Jardin de Enfant, a children's drumming school.

Abdoul was the first Malian Master drummer in the US, brought here by Brown University in 1991 to be a consultant and accompanist for their West African dance program.  Since then he has also worked as guest consultant and performer at many other universities.  He also teaches and performs at drum workshops all over the US, including the Summer Jembe Institute (NC) and Tambacounda Camp (CA).  In 1995 he released a self-titled CD, which is now in its second printing.  He collaborated on the 1996 album "Color of Dusk", as well as on the album "M'Fake", released in 1998.
Abdoul is currently working on an album with renowned kora player Toumani Diabate, to be released in 2001.

Abdoul teaches the rhythms of all of the Mandeng ethnic groups of W. Africa.  He teaches strictly traditional rhythms, rather than ballet-inspired or other modern forms.  Abdoul is known for the intensity of his classes and the perfection he demands, as well as for his sense of humor and individual attention.
