On Friday, December 15, 2000, "Michael Wall" <drum@aloha.net> asked this question?
Anyone out there got a line on (caucasian) flesh colored sports tape? The white
stuff almost glows in the dark, and the only other colors I have found are black and red.
I hate taping, but endless school gigs
are taking their toll...

I have found this tint/shade/colored tape in the "Nexcare" line from 3M (in
the medical supplies section of a drugstore/superstore). Their foam tape is this
color. There is one trick to using it that is essential knowledge to having it work
effectively: simply wrap the affected part without stretching it tight and press all
around to make certain it sticks. If this tape is stretched during application it will
break under the strain of slaps. Applied properly it works fine, however, for my
occasional boo-boo.
Yesterweek, I drummed for an African dance class and I was the only person who showed up
to drum. I have a supple split leather protective cover for my djembe that I made
out of a large red purse and some shock cord (like bungee cord, purchased in bulk). When I
play through this cover it gives the sound of a large ashika or conga. This is a much more
full sound than a single djembe in a large dance studio so I left it in place. Even with
this extra cushion of the leather I managed to blood blister the thumb side of my left
ring finger. It is like the side of my finger got jammed into the edge of my finger nail,
I am currently looking to what there is about my technique that permitted this to happen.
I do know that to overcome the deficit of no other drums being played, I was hitting
extremely hard nonstop for between twenty minutes and a half an hour and have not the
first clue when exactly it happened, as I did not notice until we stopped for a water
break.

You can try J&J Elastikon, coNco AC-tape, or Beiersdorf Elastoplast. These products
are stretch tape, similar to an 'ace' bandage with glue on the back, and come in designer
tan. You can get them mail order (by the crate) at: http://www.masune.com/
Lots of luck finding just one roll!

I have found that 3M plastic tape (not the "Scotch" kind) works well. Most
hardware, stationary, and drug stores carry it. Find it on a rack with many different
colors and two widths. The "clear" works great. It seems to be a bit more
flexible than the colored variety, and someone would have to look pretty close to see it
on. - K.K.
