STYLE OF DANCE: Students from beginners
to advanced children 6 to adults are taught a variety of dances and their
meanings including: Mandiani;
Ekonkon, Soko, Soun Dounba, KouKou, Lamba and Timini.
Description of Dance Classes: At MBAA’s FireHouse Community Arts Center & Academy African Dance provides a connection to our ancestors through movement. By learning and translting the movements, we stay linked to our culture and our history. Students learn how to control their breathing while exerting energy, to use their own personal strength and endurance, to turn individual movements into meaning.

Senegalese percussionist and dancer. Born into a griot family.
Founded Amabah Community Arts Center in The Gambia, which supported apprentices.
Master teacher of jembe, djun djun, sabar, and talking drums. Also dance
teacher. Has taught drumming and dance for over 10 years to international students.
Makes and repairs djembes, djun djuns sabar and talking drums.
