African & Middle Eastern rhythms and movements, Zeva brings her passionate love of the beat to many audiences. Zeva teaches at the Lotus Dance Studio (www.LotusDanceStudio.com) Monday nites from 7:30-8:30 pm. Beginner to advanced students welcome. Classes cover the basics of proper technique, rhythmic training, as well as ensemble playing. Instruments include djembe, junjun, bells, krin, & dumbek. Also available: goddess workshops, children’s classes and private classes upon request. Zeva has studied with numerous African djembefolas both abroad and in the U.S. She has performed with a variety of musical and dance companies including Delou Africa, Journey to Africa, Mundo Vibe, Nankama2000, Oriki Theatre, & Recreate & Move. Currently Zeva performs and collaborates with Takara Women’s Ensemble (directed by Corina Fitch) as well as Children of Kuumba (a children’s dance company under the direction of Anita MacBeth). He has been playing music his whole life. When 18, he was introduced to West African percussion. This started a passionate connection with hand percussion that has grown and expanded for the last 16 years. He has studied Djembe, Djunjun, Tama, Sabar, Ceruba/Kutiro, Krin, Bougarabou and Balaphone. ProfessorSlap has travelled twice to West Africa to better understand the culture from which the music comes and to study with master percussionists there, as well as in the USA. His teachers are from all ever West Africa and include Abdouli Diakite, Karamba Dioubate, Abdoul Doumbia, Mabiba Bagne, Sulemon Diop and Dibi Diop-Faye to name a few. He has played with various touring international artists including: Djaily Kunda Kouyate, Ibro Diabate, M'Balou Kante, Balla Tounkara, Karamba Diabate, Mohammed Kouyate, Lokole West and Central African Dance Ensamble, Delou West African Dance Ensamble, Panjea, Onye Onyamachi as well as leading his own original 14 piece urban Hip-Hop, soul, funk, jazz, West African group in California The Slaptones. He has also played for touring and local African dance teachers Allisane Kane, Assane and Oussaynou Kouyate, Nabi Camara, Mabiba Bagne, Alseny Soumey, Manjou Kone, Saidou Ba Camara and more.
