Learn Traditional Congolese
African Drum and Dance from Master Massengo
Zorina Wolf About me: Baba
Olatunji has been as important mentor and guide, for not only drumming but
how to teach... with patience, inclusiveness, magic, and love. I am
proud to have been his student for 14 years. Also studied Ghanian and
Congolese music. I met Reinhard and Cornelia Flatischler at a workshop in
fall 1996, and saw the potential for the next step ..to learn rhythm from
the inside out. Anyone whether musically trained or not can use Ta Ke Ti
Na to enter into rhythmic intelligence.

I teach beginner/intermediate hand drumming in the San
Diego/North County area with focus on West African, Middle- Eastern and Latin rhythms. My
djembe teachers have included Lamine Dibo Camara, Baba Olatunji, and Paulo
Mattioli.
I have played djembe for 10+ years, and long before that have played drumset and
various hand drums, largely self taught, but have sought the wisdom of the masters. I have
also set up and conducted rhythm therapy sessions with children and elders through my
background as an occupational therapist. I have drummed for several dance ensembles in

Kim Atkinson Pulsewave Percussion P O Box 703 Sebastopol, CA 95473 707 823-8885 Email: Kim Atkinson teaches Djembe/Dundun, Conga and percussion, Brazilian Percussion, Cuban Music, Drum Set, Body Rhythm, and Rhythm Theory. All ages and levels. Presentation can be tailored to fit many situations including low pressure community - hobbyist - to extensively analytical and challenging for college students and professionals. Personal statement follows: DJEMBE / DUNDUN is a class for intermediate players.
I like to teach this class as my teachers taught me, by example, without words or
concepts. I go slowly and methodically and I prefer not to get into excessive analysis or
discussion. I demand memorization and do not use notation. Students learn and remember by
speaking syllables. Our repetoir consists of material I have learned from Abdoulaye
Diakite, Mamady Keita and Karamba Dambakate, including: KOTEBA / FOROKOROBA, YANKADI /
MAKRU, SUNU, SORSONETT, KUKU, KOMODENU, KASSA, MANDIANI, KAKILAMBE (4 &6), DJAN,
DOMBA, and other rhythms. I teach each rhythm with a specific call or break which
identifies it. This allows me call changes and new rhythms with my drum and keep verbal
talking to a minimum and drum talk to a maximum. This keeps energy fresh, moving forward,
and aligned with the tradition. Typically we play one ensemble rhythms for 6 to 10 weeks
while briefly touching on others to maintain our repetoir. As of DEC 97 we are working on
GARENGEDON. I encourage senior students to improvise, solo, and memorize lead technique
patterns and arrangements. Private lessons and intro. classes are available. |
