Class Schedule, Location & Fees:
 
Jenbe Drumming, Level I: For students will no or minimal experience with Jenbe, Dununs or West African rhythmical concepts. Students will get instruction on proper playing techniques and basic rhythmical concepts. Level I classes are conducted in four week sessions, in which students committ to all four weeks. Payment is due at or prior to the first class of each session. No drop-ins, you may enter the class at the beginning of each session. A drum will be provided at an additional rental fee if you do not have one. Martin Klabunde, Instructor

Bio:
Martin Klabunde is the co-founder and executive director of The Dambe Project, an Arizona 501c(3) non-profit organization that specializes in African Arts Education. Using traditional music, song and dance of Guinea, Mali and Uganda, Martin conducts community workshops and school residencies in Tucson, Arizona.
 

Over the last 8 years he has produced workshops with master dancers such as Youssouf Koumbassa, Moustapha Bangora, Alseny Soumah and musicians such as Abdoul Doumbia, Karamba Dambakate and Mamady Keita. Martin’s performance ensembles have performed with Baba Maal, a Senegalese pop musician, Cubanismo, a fifteen member Cuban All-Star band, and the African Showboyz, a group from Ghana. He has also worked with many local musicians in Arizona.

 

Martin has also conducted international music and dance workshops and performances. In Kampala, Uganda Martin co-directed workshops with music and dance students at Makarere University that culminated into a performance at the Ugandan National Theatre. In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Martin co-conducted music and dance workshops for the Adunga Dance Company.

 

Martin graduated with a degree in Language and Culture from the University of Arizona in 2003. Martin has studied and performed for the past twenty years under the direction of many West African Master percussionists such as Mamady Keita and Abdoul Doumbia.. He has traveled and studied in African countries such as Guinea, Mali, Uganda, Tanzania, Zanzibar and Ethiopia. From his experiences in Africa, Martin develops themes for public performance and curriculum for the Dambe Project.

Class Schedule, Location & Fees: Weekly classes $12 or 4 for $40.

Description of Drum Classes:  Classes are designed for beginner and intermediate drummers.  Students are taught skills building exercises as well as traditional and original drum songs.  The emphasis is on empowerment and finding ones voice on the drum.  Traditional West African djembe rhythms as well as Afro Cuban conga rhythms are taught.
Drums are available for play and for student rental.  The classes are held in a private studio with great ambiance.  Be prepared for candles and incense.  The teaching technique is eclectic, using notation as well as oral tradition.

Resumé of teacher: Barbara Bird has been empowering drummers since 1981.  Her teachers include M'Bemba Bangoura, Abdouhle Aziz, Fred Simpson, Paulo Mattioli, Rico Quintero, Carolyn Brandy, Flaco Diaz, and various dudes in the park.  She has also attended countless workshops and drum camps including Tambacounda Camp, Moonsisters Drum Camp, and Arthur Hull  Hawaii Playshops.  She was a facilitator at Maui Rhythm Village 2000 and 2001.
    Barbara has a charismatic enthusiasm and a bold, expressive, style of drumming.  As Arthur Hull has said, "Grandma Rocks!"

Class Schedule, Location & Fees:  Friday nights – Level I class from 6:30 – 8:00 pm, Level II class from 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm, Level III classes by invitation.

            Fee is $10 per class

STYLE OF DRUM:  Traditional West African djembe and dunun
Description of Drum Classes:
The classes focus on traditional Malinke rhythms.  All djembe accompaniment parts are taught along with all the appropriate dunun phrases.  Solo phrases and dundun variations will be introduced, if possible.

The classes are organized in blocks of 6 weeks. This way, the classes can have continuous learning and improvement without having to revisit the previously learned material every week because of fluctuating attendance.  The price for the 6 week block is $60 (or $10 per class).
In order to account for the different skill levels, we have 3 levels of classes. The classes are taught by Bernd Geh with the assistance of selected AZD&D level 3 students.

Bernd is originally from Germany and his major and most influential teacher is Herman Kathan, who is a professional musician and a certified Mamady Keita instructor. Bernd has also learned from numerous african masters and teachers, such as Mamady Keita, Famodou Konate, Adama Drame, Amadou Kienou, Moussa Traore and Abdoul Doumbia.
