Description of Drum Classes: This particular camp is a 6 day camp
Résumé of teacher:
At the age of 15, Chris began his studies in African drumming with Titos Sompa - a tribal 'seer', master musician & dancer. He recognized Chris's destiny and talent taking him to Africa on what became an amazing 10 year journey to the heart and soul of African culture. This included playing at ceremonies with master musicians, dancers and healers and reaching the top of the charts in Zimbabwe with his band 'Panjea'. Chris has shared the stage with renown artists like Youssou NDour, Thomas Mapfumo and The Blacks Unlimited, Ali Farka Tour, Black Umpholosi as well as several African National Ballet Companies.
Through his multifaceted talents as a drummer, singer, composer, storyteller, mbira player and lecturer, Chris conveys a message from the drum rhythms that is both ancient and new to help bring about wholeness within our culture.
Chris trained in Zimbabwe and Rujeko is Zimbabwean so their style of dance and drumming has huge Zimbabwean influence. But it is to be noted that Chris plays the Djembe and Bougarabou which are not traditional Zimbabwean drums. Contact Suzannah Pritchard-Laborie for more info.

Pape now lives in Sydney Australia since mid-1999. Born a griot he became the head
drummer of his village, Yoff, from a very early age and continued as head drummer for more
than 25 years. He has choreographed and led many drum and dance troups including his
latest African Children which toured
Europe. Yoff is a traditional village that is culturally very interesting and has
produced numerous professional dancers and musicians. As a consequence Pape has had
many drum and dance students visiting him from overseas. Many of which reached a
level where they were able to perform at
village ceremonies as well as festivals in Dakar. In fact they even surprised the
local Senegalese community at how quickly they had learnt the rhythms.
